There are a variety of approaches
that can be used in teaching your children at home.
The tutorial nature of home schooling allows much more
flexibility in the approach that you can use. Here
are a few common approaches:
Traditional Approach
Graded textbooks and workbooks are the education tools
that most of us remember from our early years of school.
This approach is commonly used in the classroom setting,
and incorporates students working in a specific grade
level in each subject with seatwork and testing
occupying the majority of the student's time.
Classical Approach
Dating back to the Middle Ages, this approach teaches
history chronologically in three main stages as the
student develops from early elementary, to middle
school, to high school, focusing on ancient disciplines
and classics.
Unit Study Approach
A less structured approach that takes a theme or topic
and studies it over a period of time, integrating a wide
range of subjects into the topical study.
Unschooling Approach
The least structured of all the home schooling
approaches that allows children to pursue their own
interests with parental support and guidance.
Literature-based approach
(link to article explaining the power of this
approach)
Using a wide range of real
books - historical fiction, classics, biographies and
non-fiction - to immerse the child into the focus of
study rather than skimming the surface details.
This approach tends to provide a more relaxed
environment for learning as families are able to teach
children of several ages from one program of study.
Whether you want to focus on great literature, or
integrate this approach into a Classical or Unit Study
curriculum, Sonlight Curriculum provides excellent
materials that save you time. For those who prefer
to listen to an explanation of the literature-based
approach rather than read an article, you will likely
enjoy a
podcast presentation.
